Safety – Falls from Heights

The Board discussed what more can be done to highlight the risk and dangers of working at height. It was agreed to re-issue ELR’s Guidance on working safely at height via HOPS.

Infrastructure

Refurbishment work on the bridge at Springside Farm is well advanced.

Planning has started for the next phase of track relaying for next winter 2024.

Traction & Rolling Stock

  • Large steam locomotive provision remains a challenge, services are being covered with the smaller locomotives and using diesel assistance when required.
  • 80097 flu tubes have now arrived with correct paperwork, although not confirmed the flu tubes should be installed during early June, but no date as yet when the locomotive will be back in service.
  • Mechanical repairs to Loco 51456 and 32 now concluded, 32 to go on hire to Mid Hants for their 9-day Thomas event in August.
  • Final painting of Coach 17019 (BFK) being sponsored by a local company as part of their efforts to support Charities.
  • Good progress made on loco works repairs, west wall, and roof lights to make wind & watertight costing over £60,000.

Events

40s Weekend-A very enjoyable event, which is being re-introduced post Covid. One of the highlights was the flypast on two successive days which included a Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane. Our thanks go to our staff, volunteers, re-enactors and performers for creating this unique experience of a by-gone era.

For 2023 new events have proved very popular including Peter Rabbit; Paddington; Bluey and Bingo.

Small Engines Weekend

Join us for this new event, for those who appreciate smaller locomotives

It’s your chance to ride up and down the East Lancs Railway, hauled by our fleet of our smaller heritage steam and diesel engines, plus special guest – Steam Tram “Lucie” from NYMR visiting the ELR for the first time.

These small but perfectly-formed locomotives, some of which are built for stamina rather than speed, are often found shunting around the station at Bury. This is a rare chance to ride behind these charismatic power-houses.

Climb aboard and ride all weekend. The locomotive line-up includes:

  • Cockerill Steam Tram “Lucie”
  • 0-4-0 L&Y Pug 19, numbered 11243
  • 0-6-0 L&Y 752, numbered 51456
  • 0-4-0 Sentinel Works 7232, “Ann”
  • 0-6-0 Hudswell Clarke 32 “Gothenburg”
