Flaming June!

As months go, June was hot hot and so were our many volunteers and staff, who manfully carried out their duties in very uncomfortable conditions. Well done to all concerned.

Small Engines Weekend- 3-4 June 17

Small Engines Weekend – We just about broke even and with two loco failures lots of improvisation to keep to timetables as best we could. With haulage costs rising its unlikely we will run such an event in future on an Annual basis. Many thanks to Chris Baily for his Stirling efforts to keep the show on the road.

Cheshire Show - June 17

Royal Cheshire Show – Sizzling temperatures didn’t stop our Commercial Team winning best display for our Dining with Distinction services and thankfully the judges arrived before our cream tea cakes melted! Well done to Kate Walker and Nicola Wilcock in showcasing the best of the ELR. They said hello to thousands of people (and nine sheep at The Sheep Show), distributed 1,000 leaflets, gave out 250 delicious shortbreads (courtesy of Slattery’s Patisserie & Chocolatier), slurped 18 litres of water, munched 8 ice creams and have four pairs of tired feet, it was so worth it!

Barry Worthington 1Barry Worthington – In June we lost Barry Worthington who, with 40 years service, was the original Guard on the re-opening of the line on the 25th July 1987. Barry has no living relatives and so the Company and Society stepped in to guarantee a proper send off. Slow progress is being made in arranging a date for the funeral, which is complicated by the fact there are no next of kin. Bury Social Services are now sorting out the arrangements for a funeral. Watch this space.

John Hobbs- 21 June 17

John Hobbs – Sadly, fell ill recently whilst acting as the RO. John, a stalwart of the railway, is now at home resting and receiving treatment. John was in good spirits when I went over to see him and pass on best wishes from all his colleagues on the railway.

John wanted me to pass on his thanks to everyone who contacted him to pass on their good wishes. It is  very heartening at this difficult time for me and my family.

BTM - Gin Tasting Event - JUne 17Bury Transport Museum – Hosted its first Gin Tasting event sponsored by KWoF Wine Shop. Great feedback, it was a huge success and well attended. Well done to our BTM staff and volunteers for putting on this, hopefully regular event.

Race th Train Event-11 June 17

Race the Train – Record numbers turned out this year to take on the challenge of beating the train travelling from Bolton Street to Rawtenstall. A total of 362 runners hot footed it with 70 scorching up the road to beat the train.

Sorry, couldn’t resist the Puns!

  1. Sorry to bang on but in February I asked about progress in repairing the damage at Horncliffe. You replied that you should be able to announce progress in April. Any idea when something will be done?
