Manchester – We Stand Together!

40’s Weekend – No one could fail to be affected by the horrific events at the Manchester Arena on Monday evening. I chaired an emergency meeting this morning (24 May) with key staff who are involved with the planning and delivery of this important annual event.

A number of key changes have been made, which are set out below in an ELR press release.

The East Lancashire Railway is deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic events that occurred on Monday night at the Manchester Arena.

The railway has today announced that their upcoming 1940s Weekend, which will take place on 27 – 29 May, will go ahead as planned with just a few changes to the schedule.

Mike Kelly, East Lancashire Railway Chairman said;

Firstly, our heartfelt condolences go out to all those affected by the horrific events that happened at the Manchester Arena on Monday night.

In light of these events, we have reviewed all aspects of our upcoming 1940s Weekend and have made a number of changes which will hopefully give reassurance to all of visitors who wish to come and enjoy the various entertainment and displays along the line. We have therefore made the decision to remove all battle re-enactments and weapon demonstrations from this year’s programme. Security has also been increased throughout the event weekend.

The community is at the forefront of our thinking and we do not wish to cause unnecessary worry to our visitors and the local area.

All other activities scheduled for the weekend will go ahead and our popular event will continue as planned, celebrating the fashion, music, dancing, vehicles, and of course spirit and unity, that the forties is famed for.

We hope the public will understand our decision. The railway will host a minute’s silence at 11am at their Bury Bolton Street Station on Saturday to honour the victims of the tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones at this sad time.”
